Mars Sr., the founder of Newark Company, and Bruce Murrie, son of Hershey Chocolate's president, had a 20 percent share in the product.Hershey had control of the rationed chocolate at the time, so the arrangement allowed the candies to be made with Hershey chocolate.[6]

The company's first big customer was the U.S. Army, which saw the invention as a way to allow soldiers to carry chocolate in tropical climates without it melting.The candy was only sold to the military during World War II.The company moved its factory to larger quarters at 200 North 12th Street in Newark, New Jersey because of the increased demand for candy.Cleveland, Tennessee opened a second factory in 1978.Half of the production of M&M's takes place at the New Jersey factory and the other half in the Tennessee factory.[2]

The candies had a black "M" imprinted on them.It was white in 1954.[7]

In the early 1950s, the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, Missouri, worked on behalf of M&M's to perfect a process whereby 3,300 pounds of chocolate centers could be coated every hour.It was [13].

Three new flavors were voted on in the M&M's flavor vote: English Toffee, Mexican Jalapeo, and Thai Coconut.It was 29 and 30.

The M&M's varieties have different sizes.White cheesecake for Easter, pumpkin spice or white candy corn for Halloween, and White Strawberry Shortcake are only available for a limited time.

MM is the Roman numeral for 2000 and M&M's were styled as "The Official Candy of the New Millennium" in 1998.The rainbow M&M's are multi-colored and filled with a variety of different filling.

"Plain" M&M's was renamed "Milk Chocolate" in 2000 and pictures of the candy pieces were added to the traditional brown and white packaging.[38]

Almond, the original green guy, Orange, a female peanut character, Chocolate Bar, and the first non-M&M character that always gets trumped by Red and Yellow by being melted are other mascots that were introduced, but no longer used.

In 1976, Mars eliminated red-colored M&M's because of health concerns over the dye amaranth (FD&C Red #2), which was a suspected carcinogen.The action was done to satisfy consumers despite the fact that M&M's did not contain the dye.When Paul Hethmon was a student at the University of Tennessee, he started a joke campaign to bring back red M&M's.The orange M&M's that had replaced the red ones were kept in production.The red dye carmine is found in red M&M's in Europe.60

In 1995 Mars ran a promotion in which consumers were invited to vote on which of blue, pink, or purple would replace the tan M&M's.Blue won with over 50% of the votes.It replaced tan in 1995.Consumers can vote by calling.The ads for the new blue colors featured a plain and almond blue M&M character as Red and Yellow took notice of trying to do takes in the commercial by painting themselves blue where they appear on stage with B.B.King singing the blues, but the filmmakers had to cut the scene because they were not the real blue M&M's.
