Mineral Oils Hydrocarbons are mainly derived from conversion processes of crude oil, but also from liquefaction of coal, natural gas and biomass.

Food packaging materials, from which MOH migrate, are the most alarming source of food contamination.

Research has focused on the presence of mineral oils in food and packaging.Konrad Grob and his staff demonstrated MOH migration from cardboard packaging for the first time in 2011.

In January of last year, a new EU Recommendation required member States to monitor MOH in food and food contact materials, and in March of this year the expected guidelines developed by the JRC were published.All interested parties involved in monitoring can use the information contained in the Guidelines.The German Draft "Mineral Oil Ordinance" has been taken as a reference since a common Regulation is still pending.

Mérieux NutriSciences has been working on a project for the development of a CEN standard and has participated in various interlab tests with satisfactory results.The studies gave the development of a robust experience, especially with paper and cardboard, vegetable oils and cereals.

The method of Mérieux NutriSciences can be used to determine other matrices, such as fish, pastry, meat, animal and vegetable fats.
