Retrace your steps on the App Store with just an iPhone or iPad.

You don't need a device to track your steps.Assuming you just carry it with you in your pocket, your phone can track how many steps you take and how far you walk alone.

If you only want to track the basics, your phone allows you to do that without wearing or charging another device.It can be found in the Apple Health app and the Google Fit app.

Thanks to the low-power movement sensors, this is possible.Older iPhones won't have this feature, so it's only possible with the iPhone 5s and newer.If you carry your phone with you, you can see how you are moving, how far you walk or run, and how many flights of stairs you climb.

It is a bit more complicated on theAndroid side.Even though it will work on older phones, it won't work as well on newer phones that have low-power sensors.On StackOverFlow, an engineer explained that he was a Google Fit engineer.

We use machine learning to identify the activity and duration.We use step counters to monitor step counts.We use the activity detected to predict the number of steps.

If you have a new phone that has a similar sensor, you should be able to use it.If you have an older phone, it will use data from other sensors to guess how many steps you've taken, and it may not be as accurate.

You can access this information by tapping the "Health" application icon on your home screen.The Dashboard will appear with the cards "Flights Climbed", "Steps" and "Walking + Running Distance".You can see how many steps you have taken, how far you've walked and run, and the number of flights of stairs you climbed with the "Day," "Week," and "Month" cards.You can see how active you have been by looking at your most active and least active days.

Apple Health is included on some new phones.You can still install it on older phones, but it will work better on newer phones with motion- tracking hardware.

If you don't already have the "fit" app on your phone, you need to install it.

You will need to set up Google Fit and give it access to the sensors it needs to monitor your step count.You can see how many steps you have taken, as well as an estimate of the number of calories you burned, after you open the Fit app.

If you have an Apple Watch, Android Wear watch, or another fitness- tracking device that integrates with these platforms, you can use the Apple Health and Google Fit apps.Dedicated watches and fitness-tracking devices may be able to provide more data, but your phone can provide some of the basics.

Take your phone with you.If you use a "wearable", you will always have it on throughout the day, and you won't have to keep your phone in your pocket.The amount of steps and distance you have traveled will be under-counted if you do that.You will need to have your phone on you when you walk around the house or office.
