The adventure begins at the foot of Umbra Hills.The mountains are covered in white snow.A young woman hurriedly riding through the night hits and seemingly kills an elderly woman on the road; realizing no-one has seen her, she hastily covers the body and rides away in a panic.The Ass Sailor is the second crappiest tavern in town and the sign has been vandalized.The Ass Sailor is warm and most patrons leave weapons, armor and extra clothes in a pile by the door.
On a night that will prove to be unlike any other, Val rushes in and gets to work.At the bar is a wealthy Summer Eladrin half-elf asking questions about a young girl.She is at the bar with Clothesline, a Tabaxi fighter whose face is covered in bandages from a street brawl.Clothesline doesn't like Gryffin's appearance and asks for milk and catnip.
A pale, white-haired girl named Jayne Merriweather is sitting by herself when she is approached by a local drow bar-fly, prostitution and one-time successful poet named Kingston LaForge.She declined Kingston's offer of a beer, asking instead for bread, which Val places on the bar tab.
Kingston has a boring and self-aggrandizing life story.Clothesline wants Kingston to leave the girl alone.Her all-time favorite poet is Kingston, and she is frantically asking for his autograph.Kingston makes a disastrous attempt to flirt with Clothesline, which ends with the towering fighter attacking him.
The tavern's owner,Xavier, intervenes, and things briefly settle down before two dwarfs enter with a young red-haired girl, Holly, who matches the description given to Gryffin.One of the dwarves is the one who directed Gryffin to the Ass Sailor, the other is Obby 'The Rat', Sam's PC from the earlier one-shot "Critical Role Extra - The Return of Liam!"(Sx15)Holly is being transported by Frankfurt and he wants to find someone named Garello to complete the delivery.
Things get more complicated when Kingston recognizes the dwarf who had an affair with his wife.Kingston confuses her by telling her about the feud.
Across the room, Clothesline gets a wink and nod from Jayne, who is attempting to give Kingston advice regarding his beef with Frankfurt.When Kingston sees a symbol of The Lawbearer, he rants about how much he hates the Gods.
When Clothesline attacks her, she is interrupted by yelling "SORRY, XAVIER!"She ripped into Gryffin's head with her claws.The room explodes into violence.As Clothesline fights and Kingston is attacked by Frankfurt, Jayne takes the opportunity to bewitch Holly and command her to leave the premises.
The characters flash forward to the next day, where they are questioned by the town constables.The princess of Illyria, an Eladrin city which only appears during solar eclipses, was knocked unconscious by an attacker and left outside the city with no way to return.She was looking for Holly because she might have information that could help her figure out Illyria's next appearance.Kingston told the stories of his work as a sex worker for the elderly women in the town.Clothesline says that she owed a favor to the girl after she saved her life by starting the bar brawl.The interview was changed to ask about the Chained Oblivion cult.As the Constable asks what a sweet young girl was doing in the Ass Sailor that night, she casts Sacred Flame on him, the flash forward dissolving as the constable suddenly burst into flame...
Gryffin pours bottles for improvised molotovs after getting Val to hand over her keg of greep.When Holly and Obby move to secure her, her plan is ruined, as she walks towards Jayne, who was attacked by a patron.Everyone in the room is forced to take off their clothes or suffer exhaustion as the temperature climbs.
Gryffin accidentally sets fire to the bar and the tavern cat, and as she sends a Fire Bolt at Clothesline she is overcome by her wild magic, behaving erratically and lapsing into an aggressive New Jersey accent.When she regains her senses, she proposes to team up with a dwarf to protect Holly.
Suddenly and without warning, a new figure burst into the bar, looking like a human but with glowing red eyes, and making out a tail under his cloak.All eyes turn on him, except for Kingston, who is still fixated on killing Frankfurt.He appears to be especially susceptible to the rays of cold that he hits the person with.Clothesline realized the death cleric was betraying her and was using her as a patsy, even though her Sanctuary spell prevented her from retaliating.Obby decided this was above his pay grade and left the bar.Killing a patron in the way, the man bolts down a trapdoor into the basement and takes Holly with him.
Light was cast on Kingston's ass when she kicked him into the hole at the trapdoor.Clothesline suggests that she be restrained because of her untrustworthiness.She knows something about Holly but doesn't know who kidnapped her and suggests they work together to save her.
A trail of melted frost that would seem to show where the abductor fled is actually a different corridor and the bar's greep distillery.
Clothesline blocked the doorway and grabbed her by the throat as she turned back towards the party.Realizing that she has no leverage over Clothesline since she doesn't care about Holly, she hit her with a powerful spell that nearly killed her.She is a cleric of the Chained Oblivion and offers to let Clothesline live in exchange for her help in retrieving Holly.Clothesline agreed to help her because she knew she wouldn't have a chance against the Death Cleric.
In the entrance room, Gryffin tries to convince Kingston and Frankfurt to put their differences aside for the time being.The next room contains poison-spitting pillars carved with serpent symbols, hundreds of numbers carved into the ceiling in various colors, and a magical padlock.They can open the padlock with a pattern in the numbers.
There is a large golden portal in the next room.It seems we all want this youngling, as he stands before it, holding a struggling and bloody Holly, and addresses the party.I saw her first.She needs to be below, as the kidnapper lunges for Gryffin.Clothesline was knocked unconscious by a blow from the salamander's tail.An old woman demands to know where the bitch that ran me over with a horse is, as the salamander is worn down by the party.
Seeing Clothesline unconscious and hoping to clear up a loose end, Jayne attempts to finish the job by breaking her neck, but Kingston uses Healing Word to revive the tabaxi.Clothesline delivered a devastating double clothesline combo to Jayne and almost knocked her out.The attack inadvertently exposes the holy symbol of the Chained Oblivion, which is what the cult that massacred his village was called.The old woman was killed by his attempt to attack her.
