Should I put a rug under my coffee table?

I would like to use the area rug in this picture.Can it be a piece of art under the table, or is it too small?

Your question is valid, despite the nice accent carpet.I would suggest a carpet that is large enough to meet the width of your sectional and extend a couple of feet into the room.
