Many dairy-free consumers are confused by Smart Balance Buttery Spreads.Over the years, this brand has changed more times than I can count.Earth Balance and Smart Balance were produced by a company called GFA Brands.They are made by the same company.ConAgra Foods bought the company after it was bought by Boulder Brands.
Many of the Smart Balance products started out with dairy, but the Earth Balance line has been dairy-free all along.They added a dairy-free Smart Balance Buttery Spread after making a light version.Smart Balance went completely dairy-free and plant-based one day.There was a time when their packaging said "dairy free butter" on the front.Some of their old customers weren't happy about this, so they have since added a dairy "Butter Blend" line of products back into their mix.
All of the Smart Balance Buttery Spreads are dairy-free, but there is a dairy butter blend line of spreads.Whew!The two lines look different.The butter blends are small and the spreads are large.They removed the word "butter" from the packaging to avoid potential dairy lawsuit issues, but they are still dairy free.
