TexasStair Railing and Guard Building Code Guidelines is part of the general site and building elements.

The scope.Where required by Chapter 2 or referenced in this document, the provisions of Chapter 5 will apply.

General.There are car and van parking spaces.width measurements of parking spaces and access aisles will be made from the centerline of the markings.

The full width of the line defining the parking space or access aisle can be included in the measurement.

There are 502.2 vehicle spaces.The minimum width for car parking spaces is 2440mm and the minimum for van parking is 3350mm.

There is an exception where the access aisle is 96 inches wide.

There is an access aisle.The aisles that serve parking spaces must comply with 502.3.Access aisles are adjacent to an accessible route.Two parking spaces will be allowed to share an aisle.

There is an advisory about access aisle.It is necessary to connect parking spaces to entrances.There are marked crosswalks in parking facilities where the accessible route must cross traffic lanes.It's better if the route doesn't pass behind parked vehicles.

There is a width.60 inches is the minimum width of the access aisles for car and van parking spaces.

There is an advisory about marking.State or local laws or regulations may be used to address the method and color of marking.It is important that the aisle is clearly marked because the requirements allow it to be as wide as a parking space.

There is a location.The access aisles will not overlap the vehicular way.Access aisles can be placed on either side of the parking space, but only on the passenger side.

There is an advisory about the location.Wheelchair lifts can be found on the passenger side of vans.It is more difficult to back out of a parking space into a vehicular lane for drivers who operate vans.If a van and car share an access aisle, it's a good idea to locate the van space so that the aisle is on the passenger side.

The floor or ground surface has something to do with it.There are parking spaces and access aisles for them.The aisles will be the same level as the parking spaces.Changes in level are not allowed.

There is an advisory for the floor or ground surface.To provide a surface for wheelchair transfer to and from vehicles, the access aisles must be nearly level in all directions.The slope for drainage is allowed by the exception.Curb ramps are not allowed to project into parking spaces because they would create slopes greater than 1:48.

The clearance is 502.50 vertical.The minimum vertical clearance for parking spaces for vans and access aisles is 98 inches.

There is an advisory about vertical clearance.Customer assistance can be provided by signs at entrances to parking facilities that inform drivers of clearances and the location of van accessible parking spaces.

Identification.The International symbol of accessibility is included in the parking space identification signs.There are signs that say "van accessible."60 inches is the minimum height above the finish floor or ground surface measured to the bottom of the sign.

There is an advisory about identification.The designation of "van accessible" is meant to be informative, not restrictive, in identifying spaces that are better suited for van use.Motor vehicle laws, including parking privileges, are a local matter.

There is a relationship to accessible routes.Cars and vans will not be allowed to obstruct the required clear width of adjacent accessible routes when parking in parking spaces and access aisles.

There is a relationship to accessible routes.The clear width of accessible routes can be reduced by vehicle overhangs.

There is a vehicle pull-up space.A vehicular pull-up space of 96 inches wide and 20 feet long is provided by passenger loading zones.

There is an access aisle.Access aisles will be provided next to the vehicle pull-up space in passenger loading zones.Access aisles will not overlap the vehicular way.

The width was 503.3.1.60 inches is the minimum width of the access aisles.

The floor and ground surface.Pull-up spaces and access aisles are required to comply with 302.The access aisles will be the same level as the vehicle pull-up space.Changes in level are not allowed.

There is a vertical clearance.A vertical clearance of 114 inches (2895mm) is required from the passenger loading zone to the vehicular exit.

There are Treads and Risers.All steps on a flight of stairs have the same tread depths and riser heights.The minimum and maximum height of the risers are 100 and 180mm.The minimum tread depth is 11 inches.

There is an advisory for the tread surface.Provide visual contrast on tread nosings, or at the leading edges of treads, so that people with low vision can see stair treads.

504.5 Nosings.The leading edge of the tread has a maximum radius of 1/2 inch.The underside of nosings that project beyond risers will have a curved edge.The tread will allow the risers to slope under it at an angle of 30 degrees.The projection of the nosing is allowed to extend 1 1/2 inches over the tread below.

There are wet conditions.Stair treads and landings will be designed to prevent water from accumulating.

General.It is required at ramps, stairs and along walking surfaces to have a handrail.

Advisory 505.1 is general.On ramp runs with a rise greater than 6 inches (150mm) and on certain stairways, handrails are required.There is no requirement for handrails on walking surfaces with running slopes less than 1:20.When walking surfaces have running slopes less than 1:20, handrails are required to comply with 505.These sections only reference requirements for ramps and stairs and do not apply to handrails provided on walking surfaces with running slopes less than 1:20.

In assembly areas, handrails are not required on both sides of aisle ramps if a handrail is provided at either side or within the aisle width.

There is continuity.Handrails will be continuous within the full length of each flight.Between flights or runs, the inside handrails on switchback or dogleg stairs and ramps will be continuous.

In assembly areas, there will be no requirement for the handrails on the ramps to be continuous.

The height was 505.4.Minimum and maximum gripping surfaces of handrails are 34 inches and 38 inches, respectively.There should be a consistent height above walking surfaces, stair nosings, and ramp surfaces.

There is an advisory of 505.4 height.There are requirements for adults in this document.When children are the principal users in a building or facility, a second set of handrails at an appropriate height can assist them and aid in preventing accidents.For handrails designed for children, the maximum height should be measured to the top of the gripping surface from the ramp surface or stair nosing.The minimum vertical clearance between the upper and lower handrails should be 9 inches.

The clearance is 505.5.The minimum clearance between handrail gripping surfaces and adjacent surfaces is 1 1/2 inches.

There is aripping surface.Handrail gripping surfaces will not be obstruction along their sides or tops.The handrail gripping surface's bottoms should not be more than 20 percent of their length.Minimum horizontal projections shall be 1 1/2 inches below the bottom of the handrail gripping surface.

There are exceptions: 1.The bottoms of handrail gripping surfaces will be allowed to be obstruction along their entire length where they are integral to crash rails or bumper guards.2.For each 1/2 inch (13mm) of additional handrail perimeter that exceeds 4 inches (100mm), the distance between horizontal projections and the bottom of the gripping surface will be reduced.

There is an advisory about the stripping surface.People with disabilities, older people, and others benefit from continuous gripping surfaces that allow users to reach the fingers outward or downward to grasp the handrail, particularly as the user senses a loss of equilibrium or begins to fall.

There is a cross section.The Handrail gripping surfaces must have a cross section.

There is a circular cross section.The Handrail gripping surfaces with a circular cross section must have an outside diameter of at least 1 1/2 inches.

There are non-Circular Cross Sections.A non-circular cross section shall have a perimeter of 4 inches (100mm) minimum and a maximum of 160mm.

There are 505.8 surfaces.The Handrail gripping surfaces and any surfaces adjacent to them should be free of sharp or abrasive elements.

There are Handrail Extensions.The Handrail gripping surfaces shall extend beyond and in the same direction of stair flights and ramp runs.

There are exceptions: 1.Continuous handrails at the inside turn of switchback or dogleg stairs and ramps will not need extensions.2.In assembly areas, extensions are not required for ramp handrails in serving aisles where the handrails are discontinuous to provide access to seating.3.Full extensions of handrails won't be required in alterations where they would be hazardous.

The Ramps have a top and bottom extension.The minimum length of the ramp handrails is 12 inches above the landing.Extensions can return to a wall, guard, or the landing surface.

The top extension is at the stairs.The minimum height of the handrails at the top of a stair flight is 12 inches.Extensions may return to a wall, guard or the landing surface, or may be continuous to the handrail of an adjacent stair flight.

The bottom extension is at the stairs.At the bottom of a stair flight, handrails should extend at the slope of the flight for a horizontal distance at least equal to one tread depth beyond the last riser nosing.Extension can return to a wall, guard or the landing surface, or can be continuous to the handrail of an adjacent stair flight.
