The Concept of “Li” in Confucius’ Social Ethics is in Simple English.

Li is a classical Chinese word which is used in Chinese philosophy.Li does not encompass a definitive object but rather a somewhat abstract idea and is translated in a number of different ways.Wing-tsit Chan says that li originally meant a religious sacrifice, but has evolved to mean ceremony, ritual, decorum, rules of propriety, good form, etc.[2]

Human agency is involved in the ordering of the universe.There are many Chinese definitions of a rite.One of the most common definitions is that it transforms the invisible to visible; through the performance of rites at appropriate occasions, humans make visible the underlying order.The social, which is the human realm, should be kept in harmony by performing the correct ritual that focuses, links, orders, and moves the social.The Son of the emperor used to be responsible for centering this procedure.It was done by all those who conducted state, ancestral, and life-cycle rites, as well as by the Daoists who did the local gods’ rites as a centering of the forces of exemplary history.[3]

The Western conception of religious custom does not include the rites of li.li embodies the entire spectrum of interaction with humans, nature, and even material objects.Learning, tea drinking, titles, mourning, and governance are some of the topics discussed by Confucius.Songs and laughter, weeping and lamentation, the wearing of ceremonial caps, embroidered robes, and patterned silks, or of fast clothes and mourning clothes, are some of the things Xunzi cites.

The earliest historical discussions on li were held in the 25th year of the Zuo Zhuan.

Proper social behavior is taught to others by fathers, village elders and government officials.filial piety, brotherliness, righteousness, good faith and loyalty were promoted by the teachings of li.Public expectations were guided by the influence of li.

The internalization of action allows one to become more open to the sensations of the experience and yields the comforting feeling of tradition.It should maintain a healthy practice of selflessness, both in the actions themselves and the proper example which is set for one’s brothers.Approaches in the community as well as personal approaches show how li is present in all things.The complete realization of li is what this is.

Nature has dynamic rituals and practices.Changing views and beliefs in society have led to the revision and evaluation of Li practices.Although these practices may change over time, the fundamental ideals remain at the core of li, which largely relate to social order.
