The first decemvirate was appointed around 450 BC to draw up the first ten tables.According to Livy, they sent an embassy to Greece to study the legislative system of Athens, but also to find out about the legislation of other Greek cities.Some scholars say that the Romans did not travel all the way to Greece, but only visited the Greek cities of Southern Italy.The second decemviri started to work on the last two tables in 450 BC.

The first ten codes were completed by the decemvirate.Livy describes their creation.

5.The debtor will be held in bonds for sixty days unless they make a compromise.They will be brought to the comitia on three markets during those days.

A new understanding within social classes in ancient Rome that insured financial exploitation would be limited within legal business transactions was created by the five mandates of the Twelve Tables.

The fourth table deals with the rights of the patriarchal families.One of the first things that was said in the table was that "dreadfully deformed" children must be euthanized.It explains that sons inherit their family's wealth.Babies with diseases must be killed by their fathers.If a husband no longer wants to be married to his wife he can remove her from their household and order her to mind her own affairs.The son earns his freedom if his father tries to sell him three times.

The legal rights of females are given a basic understanding in the three sections of the Twelve Tables.

A woman's legal status and standing in society are highlighted in the Twelve Tables.Sections on ownership and possession give off the impression that women were considered to be akin to a piece of real estate or property due to the use of terms such as "ownership" and "possession".[17]
