There are eight sides to a stop sign, why?

That is a stop sign. The dead event? The sign appears to have a big word on it.There is something odd about the number of sides on the stop sign.Pieces of paper, poster board, and other sign-making materials typically come in the shape of a rectangular sign. Some of the signs are round. But an octagonal object? You don't usually see those. How did this happen?

The number of sides on street signs carries some information in and of itself.A rectangular sign tells you how fast you can go, how far from a nearby exit, etc.The general rule is that the more sides it has, the greater the danger.According to Mental Floss, Do Not Enter signs are circles because it is an incredibly bad idea to go the wrong way on the highway. The railroad crossing signs are circles because it is equally dangerous to cross the tracks when a train is coming. It is almost exclusively used for school advance warning signs, which tell you that you are in a school zone and kids could be crossing the street. They aren't included in this hierarchy for some reason.Drivers are told to slow down and stop if necessary by yield signs. There is less danger ahead so these have three sides.

The stop signs are at the top of the sign hierarchy. You really can't afford to miss stop signs, unlike yield signs. You should also pay attention to yield signs. You get the idea.In 1923, stop signs were standardized across the United States. The original stop signs weren't reflective so we needed a design that could be easily recognizable at night.

That is not the whole story. If the Do Not Enter sign is no longer needed for its current purpose, it can be turned into a Speed Limit or other rectangular sign. Most stop signs are cut into octagonal shapes. Why?Drivers approaching the intersection from other directions know what to do.The octagonal shape makes it easy for drivers traveling in the opposite direction to see the sign from the back.

The whole point of the signs is that they add up to fewer accidents. The unique shape of the eight-sided traffic indicator keeps drivers and pedestrians safe.
