There are structures that allow sarcodines to move.

When you think about living things, you probably think of animals and plants.Protozoans do not ping your radar.

Even if they aren't the furriest or Cuddliest creatures on the block, these microscopic organisms are definitely worthy of your attention.

Since some of their features and behaviors seem animal-like at first glance, scientists used to call them one-celled animals. The term protozoan is no longer a true category for purposes of taxonomy.

Scientists now use complex genetics to map the relationships between organisms, so those once classified as protists now show up all over the tree of life.

protozoan is an informal way to describe single-celled eukaryotes who rely on other organisms for fuel. The nucleus of all protozoans is enclosed by a membrane.Heterotrophs can't get their energy directly from the sun and must consume other living things to power their bodies.Protozoans use projections such as flagella or pseudopodia to move from place to place in watery environments.

Amoebas are the most well-known of the group. The term sarcomastigophora is used by some biologists to include both amoebas and flagellates. It makes sense since some of these organisms cause disease.

They have a gel-like interior that has a flow they use to move things around inside. For important tasks like traveling and eating, sarcodines use pseudopodia. These organisms reproduce sexually by joining gametes and asexually by dividing or budding.

The group is quite diverse and the similarities end there. Some sarcodines live alone while others thrive in colonies. Some are parasites and others are free-living.Some people have flagella from one generation to the next while others don't.

The way in which the organisms use pseudopods to move around and feed is one of the most interesting features.A pseudopod is a foot-like projection that sarcodines use in the same way you use your real feet.

The organisms rely on the environment to sense which way it should go.The appendage fills with the cell's cytoplasm after it is stretched into it.Some sarcodines seem to move randomly while others follow chemical signals.

Pseudopodia can also be used for feeding. The projection was used to trap the prey. The pseudopods are sticky and mesh-like and can be used to catch prey.

Amoebas are well-known.The life cycle helps the E. histolytica during infections. The inactive form of the amoeba is called a cyst and is capable of withstanding very harsh conditions.

Four trophozoites are released from the cyst when conditions are safer in the lower areas of the GI tract. The infectious form of the trophozoites is the second stage.

The amoeba can return to cyst form and pass out of the body with bowel movements after wreaking damage in the intestines and possibly entering the bloodstream. The amoeba can spread to other people or animals.
