Thousands of hummingbirds will arrive in Ohio this spring, when will they return to Oklahoma?

Hummingbird migration is the flight to and from their winter homes in Mexico and Central America in order to take advantage of the available food sources for their survival.

The Ruby-throated hummingbird is the most common hummingbird in the eastern United States and Canada.

There is stiff competition for food in Mexico and Central America, where the Ruby-throated hummingbird is concentrated, so they will move to North America where there is less competition. They can fly over 2000 kilometers without stopping.

If you have a hummingbird that stays year round, please post to the map.

You can follow the hummingbird migration and submit your sightings right from your phone.

The Ruby-throated hummingbird's Spring migration usually starts in February and ends in May in their northern most habitat of Canada.

Some hummingbirds migrate each year. The western coast of North America is where some will spend the winter.

Some studies suggest that it could be a problem if hummingbirds arrive in a certain area and the plants are done flowering. When hummingbirds arrive in the area, flowers may be past bloom because of warmer temperatures. They can change their migration routes according to the flowers that are in bloom. The weather affects when flowers will bloom in a particular area. When hummingbirds pass through, flowers will be in bloom, but another year they might not be.There are flowers ready to fuel their needs 300 miles or so east or west of their usual migration route.Hummingbirds have the ability to change their routes according to the resources available. The hope is that these little creatures will be able to adapt to changing conditions.
