A ferret is easy to train.Use litter that's safe for ferrets when setting up a litter box for your ferret.Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a ferret.ferrets are unlikely to use a dirty litter box so keep it clean.
Step 1: Pick a litter that's safe for ferrets.
Some litters are not safe for ferrets.Ferrets have a tendency to roll in or sniff their litter and therefore, a dust-free, unscented litter that does not clump is safest for ferrets.Good litters are made from denatured wood, recycled newspaper, and alfalfa pellets.If you run out of regular litter, you can use cat litter that isn't clumping.You can shred newspapers.As litters, avoid cedar and pine shavings.The chemicals can cause irritation to your ferret's eyes.
Step 2: Pick a large pan.
If you want your ferret to fit all four of their paws in the litter pan, make sure you pick a big box or pan.A litter pan or box with lower sides is what you want.A litter pan with lower sides will make it easier for ferrets to get in and out.
Step 3: Put your litter box in your ferret's cage.
The ferret's cage is where you want to start litter training.The ferret's cage has a litter box in it.You can fill it with your litter.You should not use the litter in the cage.It's important that your ferret knows they need to eliminate in the litter box.
Step 4: The litter box has feces and urine.
Ferrets are not like cats.You need to teach your ferret what the litter box is for because they don't instinctively use it.There is urine and feces in the litter box.The scent will make your ferret want to go.Make sure it enters the Ferret's food or water bowl.
Step 5: First you have to train your ferret.
When your ferret is litter trained, keep them in their cage.The easiest way to keep accidents contained is to teach your ferret to use the litter box.Keep your ferret contained until they eliminate in the litter box and don't have accidents in other areas of the cage.If it makes a mistake, don't shout at it.During litter training, you should take your ferret out of the cage.You don't want to keep your ferret locked up all the time.Let your ferret out of its cage whenever you can.
Step 6: Accidents must be moved to the litter box.
If you see your ferret going outside, move the accidents to the litter box.This will teach the ferret how to use the litter box.It will help create a scent in the litter box.Areas that smell like urine and feces are likely to be eliminated by ferrets.
Step 7: Your ferret is using the litter box.
Praise your ferret when they use their litter box because they respond to positive reinforcement.If you catch your ferret in the litter, give them a pat on the back.A small treat can be given to your ferret to eliminate in the litter box.Giving your ferret a particular type of treat can encourage them to use their litter box.
Step 8: The litter box needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.
A dirty litter is not likely to be used by your ferret.Clean the litter box once a day to encourage your ferret to use it.If you want to remove feces and clumps of urine, use a litter scooper.Dump the contents of the litter box once a week and replace them with fresh litter.
Step 9: Clean the accidents up.
It is possible that your ferret may have an accident outside the box.Ferrets are more likely to eliminate there again if the area smells.Clean up accidents after they happen.The stain needs to be treated quickly.If you don't clean the area, the ferret will come back to this spot and think it's an appropriate place to eliminate.If you want to prevent reoccurrence, spray something like lemon or apple bitters.Ferrets don't like the smells and will not go in these spots again.
Step 10: If your ferret digs a lot you should put your litter box in the cage.
Ferrets can dig in the litter box.The ferret is more likely to eliminate outside of the cage if the box slides around it.Attach the litter box to the side of the cage using wire if your ferret pushes it around.The sharp ends of the wire should not be in the cage.
Step 11: In areas where your ferret is going to the bathroom, put toys, water, and food.
Put your ferret's toys and food in these areas if it keeps eliminating outside the cage.Near where they eat, sleep, and play, ferrets are less likely to eliminate.Future accidents will be discouraged if you have food, toys, and bedding in the places where your ferret has accidents.
Step 12: Don't tell a ferret.
Ferrets do not respond to being scolded.If you scold a ferret for going outside, it's likely to get agitated and stressed.This will only upset your animal and will not encourage litter box training.
