If the NHL assigned an expansion franchise to Seattle how fierce would the rivalry be with Vancouver given that many Seattleites are Canucks fans

Seattle has a hockey team, The Thunderbirds, granted they are a Junior/minor league team. They used to play at Key Arena, but the stadium was shared with the basketball team (they had a modular floor that could be removed and sat in top of the ice). Also the stadium was too small, even the minor league hockey crowd could fill it when they played one of their local rivals.

Since then, the T-birds have moved to Puyallup. There have been a constant stream of rumors for at least 10 years now about The Thunderbirds being upgraded to the NHL.So if a Major league hockey team was put in Seattle it would either be the Thunderbirds (who have a VERY loyal following), or the new team would be competing with Canucks and Thunderbirds for fans.

One of the most popular soccer teams in the country, the Seattle Sounders, also started out as a minor league team.

I don’t think it would be an automatic rivalry just because of geography. There would need to be some playoff history or at least some important games. There would certainly be some visiting fans in each building, which would be fun on both sides.

Perhaps a good comparison would be Toronto vs Buffalo.Near enough for a roadtrip, but neither can be considered each other’s main rival.

It wouldn’t happen right away, since there would be no history between the two teams, but maybe after a couple seasons and maybe a playoff series, it could become pretty heated. It might end up being more of a Anaheim-San Jose sort of rivalry, which is two close teams that don’t like each other, but don’t have the hate for one another that, say, the Canucks and Blackhawks had for many seasons.
