What causes lock jaw?

Tetanus is an infection caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani. When the bacteria invade the body, they produce a poison (toxin) that causes painful muscle contractions. Another name for tetanus is “lockjaw”. It often causes a person's neck and jaw muscles to lock, making it hard to open the mouth or swallow.

Does lockjaw go away on its own?

Lockjaw is most often temporary but if it becomes permanent, it can be life-threatening. Severe lockjaw can even affect swallowing and alter the appearance of the face. Lockjaw, also known as trismus, is a condition in which a person is unable to open their jaws fully.Mar 12, 2021
