Whitechapel's not an area that was short of vicious murders and any woman found murdered with a knife in the subsequent months was held up as a Ripper murder. All the period depictions of that particular crime story had almost been too well behaved in a slightly slower way and shots have to be a bit wider to show off.[18]

The three leads of the show talked about how they got the roles.Macfadyen claims his involvement was all down to his interest in the 'fresh' script: "I had a few months of nothing, then a load of scripts all came at once, and this was by far the best."It was terrific writing, it just barrelled along.I saw the title and thought, "This has been done before, but it was so fresh, and it had all the qualities, interest and depth of a period drama."[19]

As he tried out for the pilot series, his involvement in the show was more straightforward. The latter states in an interview that he got it after auditioning and showing up.Flynn claimed that when Rothschild showed up, he was like, "I don't know how the fuck I got here!"It was basic for Flynn. The writer asked if I would be interested in playing Bronn in the show.[20]

Sam stated that it would be easy to be negative about the show.Do we really need more on a story that was done to death and then carved up and had its insides torn out?The script is real, alive and human according to his review. It's beautiful to look at and stylish. The fight scenes are brutal. It's a proper, character-based crime drama, gripping, and ripping as well.36

The performances of the three leads, which he said compensated for the dull grind of all the exposition, were praised by Benji Wilson of The Daily Telegraph.[37]

The effects of such moments are shaped by writer/ creator Richard Warlow and episode director Tom Shankland's attention to the period details: streets are sooty, gaslight creates flickering shadows, and stone floors make footsteps seem chilling. The long form narrative and deliberate pace of Ripper Street is different from the CSI and Law & Order clones. The first episode of the show has an underground boxing club sequence that is very similar to a scene from the movie "Sherlock", so much so that it's hard to imagine a coincidence. With the evolving technology of photography, some overt efforts to shock viewers deliver graphic violence and nudity, as it's inspiring an evolving "smut" industry.[34]

The setting is handled with absolute care and a razor-sharp attention to detail, from costume and production design to the varied vocal cadences of the players, the texture and flavor of London was discussed in the first episode. The show depicts London's streets in the Victorian era.

The series focuses on the evolution of the streets of London and the advent of technology at the time, as well as the introduction of early forensics. The technology that is in play here is being looked at by the dirt and bones. This is not a depiction of how charming early cameras were, but of what those cameras would have been used for.Jackson says that there is engaging interplay between those who would bring needed change and those that are the barriers to progress.[38]

ipper Street is a well-acted, well written and compelling mystery series according to The Hollywood Reporter. There is no waiting for it to improve. It is attractive from the beginning. The Los Angeles Times said it was well-written and acted.[40]
