Why is it called the 411?
411 was the number used by telephone companies for “Information”, which meant the pbone number and address of anyone who had a listed phone number. Get this! Back then, almost in the Dark Ages (before cell phones), a real live human being would actually answer and look up a number for anyone who dialed 411!
Why did people used to call 411?
4-1-1 is a telephone number for local directory assistance in Canada and the United States. Until the early 1980s, 4-1-1 and the related 1-1-3 number were free to call in most states. As a result, 4-1-1 is commonly used in Canada and the United States as a slang word for "information".
