Is the Sportster 1200 a good bike?
If you're looking for an entree into the Harley-Davidson culture and lifestyle, a Sportster is a reasonable choice. Compared to a Big Twin, it's lighter, narrower and lower, and a little easier to ride. I own a 1993 Sports Deluxe, which I bought as my first Harley back in 1994. It has been a reliable, fun companion.

Are Sportster 1200s fast?
Top Speed. Motorcycle.com tested the 2011 model XR1200R Sportster, and the top speed attained by the bike was 122 mph. Older versions of the Sportster don't attain this speed. The 2001 Sportster 1200 Customs have a top speed of 106.9 mph.
Is the Sportster reliable?
Sportster Evo's are very simple and reliable. As with any more though, proper maintenance is necessary. The top end usually needs rebuilt after 100k miles, but since it's a simple design, it's not that hard of a task. Harley's have some of the absolute best parts availability.
