What is a quench plate?

Quench plates pair- 1"x4"x16" New aluminum bar stock. We bought some big planks of Aluminum (big) and cut them into sets of plates. Use these as quench plates for your air hardening steels instead of air or even oil hardening steels. In use, place your knife from the oven, still in the pouch between the plates.

What steels can be plate quenched?

You can use any air-hardening steels, stainless and or high alloy steels eg: A2, D2 (see my guide), D3, M2, M4, 10V, 15V, 3V, Vanadis 4E, K390, 440C/N690 (see my guide), AEB-L, 154CM, S30V, M390, Elmax (see my guide), However, it is always best to check with the manufacture if in doubt.

How thick for aluminum quench plates?

most any flat 1" (3/4" minimum, it can be thicker but not thinner) Aluminum will work. Make it long and wide enough by an extra inch or two of your blade.Nov 16, 2015
