Writers who use the MLA are able to demonstrate accountability to their source material.The use of the MLA style can protect writers from accusations of plagiarizing, which is the accidental or intentional reuse of source material produced by other writers.

You should consult the MLA Handbook if you are asked to use the format.The Guide to Scholarly Publishing (3rd edition) should be consulted by publishing scholars and graduate students.Most writing centers and reference libraries have the MLA Handbook.It can be found in bookstores, libraries, and at the MLA website.There is a list of helpful books and sites in the Additional Resources section.

Part four of the MLA Style Manual covers the preparation of papers and manuscripts.There are some basic guidelines for writing a paper.

Section headings can be used to improve a document.Individual chapters or other named parts of a book or essay may be included in these sections.

When dividing an essay into sections, you should number those sections with an Arabic number and a period followed by a space and the section name.

If you use multiple levels of headings, you may want to give your instructor or editor a key to your chosen level headings.

The sample headings are only meant to be used as reference.You can use whatever system works best for you if it remains consistent throughout the document.
