What should I do with my dog that ate a toothpick?

I want to talk about the issue of the ingestion of objects. At some point, even the most cautious and careful owner will run into a situation where a dog has swallowed something it shouldn't have.If we are lucky, it is a small, blunt object that is likely to pass the stomach and intestines without causing any harm or even worse.

Murphy's law says that most of the time it will be something that raises concern because it can cause harm inside.

The situations we can run into are so many that it is impossible to speak about them as a whole, which is why I want to share what I have learned from our recent toothpick scare.Generally speaking, the outcome of a wrongful ingestion of objects largely depends on the ratio between the size of the swallowed object and the body size it is then going to have to pass through.

Whenever you are sure that you have stashed away things that your dog shouldn't eat or that can be dangerous for it in a safe place, think twice!

Living with a toddler that never grows up is what owning a Bull Terrier is like. The measures to be taken for that individual's safety are the same as for a kid or dog.We need to be aware that they do stupid things and we can't even imagine them.We can take precautions for the things we can see.I had taken the rest of the sandwich home from the restaurant, but Mila stole it.She was bold to steal the boxed food in a seemingly safe place.I would have closed the case with a short scold. The sandwich parts were held together by a pair of wooden sticks. That made a huge difference.

I caught her in the act, but most of the sandwich was already eaten.I was terrified that she had eaten the toothpicks, so I searched the entire area for pieces to be sure, but found nothing.I wanted to reach into her mouth and plug the toothpicks. They were already out of reach so there was no point in doing that.I contemplated vomiting to get everything back up.I read later that making the dog vomit is not a good idea. While taking this way out, the swallowed pieces can cause even more harm by damaging the oesophagus.

We rushed to the ER because the incident happened while we were on the road.I started searching the internet for information on first aid.

My greatest fear was that the toothpicks could cause internal bleeding.I was hoping that she had eaten slowly so that the picks wouldn't be big enough to puncture anything.

We had one more toothpick, so he suggested putting it into a bottle with juice to see how fast the pick would change.Acid in juice is not as strong as stomach acid.It would have been comforting if something happened there. The result was not comforting for me because the wood barely softened over two days in the bottle.

I knew I had to watch out for the signs of weakness, lack of appetite, and sleeping more than usual, after reading a lot on the internet.

Some people faced amused reactions when they took their dog to the vet after it had eaten a toothpick.Others described very serious scenarios. Those small wooden pieces will be resolved by stomach acid. That myth has already been busted.

I wanted to do something right now, but stumbled over.I have been to Sauerkraut before.I know it but I don't like it very much. The sources said to provide plenty of water and feed 1-2 Tablespoons of sauerkraut with each meal.Adding beef broth is one way to make sauerkraut more appetizing for dogs who don't like sauerkraut. The reason for feeding sauerkraut over a few days is that the chopped strings of sauerkraut help to digest the indigestible object. The goal is to get the foreign object into the stomach as quickly as possible.I bought a glass of sauerkraut at the next grocery store and only an hour after I ate it, my daughter had her first sauerkraut meal.

During the next three days, she ate 2 cups of sauerkraut with each of her three meals.I watched her poop.I am used to picking up after her.It wasn't hard to feel the soft mass through the bag.

She crushed them with two smaller and two larger pieces. They were not softened by her stomach acid.

She is more interested in the ground when we are outside and I was able to stop her from picking something up more than once. She used to be interested in anything on the street. That seems to have changed.

I think twice about storing away things she is not supposed to have when we go outside.I remove toothpicks from sandwiches before I eat them.toothpicks will not enter our home or car again.

I hope the story is helpful for you to see what can happen.Every case is different. The message of this post is not to spare the vet and just use sauerkraut.

Even if they laugh, I would always recommend to see a vet with the dog.You can discuss measures like sauerkraut with the vet.My dog was very lucky in this situation.!

2 days ago, my Doberman did the same thing. The vet told me not to make her throw up as it could cause damage.I fed her a lot of bread and dry dog food.Just waiting and praying that it doesn't cause damage. She seems to have no pain while drinking a lot of water. This is a lot of work.!

O-M-G!I hope your dog was as lucky as I was, so this becomes a lesson to always watch what they are doing.

Archie swallowed a wooden satay stick on Thursday morning.I screamed at him not to take the chicken off, but he snatched the whole stick and I knew it was gone.I tried to make him sick by feeding him a lot of wet food.I was able to get him to eat as much buttered bread as I could. He had me up the next morning and wanted to do his business on the back garden, but he walked around in circles as if distressed.I was expecting to find the stick when he did some pooing, but I wasn't disappointed.I continued my poop watch because Archie was showing no unusual signs through the day, but nothing Friday or Saturday. My wife took him out Friday evening but didn't check his poop until Sunday. He was checking his poop. The effort was about 20mm x 100mm and it was intact.

This is a lucky dog.You should allow it to pick the numbers for you.I'm very happy for you about that outcome. This is a nightmare situation for every owner. Thanks for sharing.

My dog ate a tooth pick.Thank you so much for writing this, I found this page.I gave him sauerkraut and two dogs rolls.I just want everything to come out okay.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for your furry friend.I would let the dog get checked by a vet if there was a chance.Had we not been out in the middle of nowhere, I would have done the same thing back then.I would recommend taking the dog to the vet if he shows any signs of being unwell.

A small wooden craft piece shaped like a turtle was swallowed by our chihuahua pug mix.Almost 48 hours ago, she did this. There is no evidence of it in her poop.I am on pins and needles because she is acting fine. The vet said to wait and see if she expels her vomit.I am afraid they will cause it to lodge because it had two small turtle legs that curved out of it.Since swallowing it, she has pooped three times.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for your little one.Humans and dogs swallow the same things. If not digestible right away, not everything passes through the body. There are items in a dog's stomach that can sit for a long time.It can cause vomiting for a long time without coming out. That can take weeks.I think it's still good to know at this point, but it probably isn't comforting. The bigger threat compared to puncturing is if the turtle's legs are not really sharp.I am not a doctor.Just hold on.Keep a close eye on your dog.You should see the vet if you notice any changes to your dog's wellbeing.Good luck!

My English mastiff puppy just caught 4 bacon wrapped shrimp and my neck hurts from trying to stop him.The ER said to try and induce vomiting, but not to do it.I am attempting the kraut.I am panicked right now.I have a can of soft food with half a cup of kibble.

My thoughts are with you and your pup. This is a large dog.Hopefully that means the larger intestines have a better chance of expelling sticks. It can take some days for something to show up.

A half of a chicken salad wrap was held together by a tooth pick by my 26 pond maltipoo.I set a timer for 20 minutes and gave a treat, I will repeat it all day.Our baby-BEAR-DOG is blind and gets two shots a day.I talked to him about 10 mini marshmallows.I have chicken doughnuts to give him.I'll try the buttered bread.I am seeing both successes and failures.

I don't understand everything you did.My hope is that this will be a positive outcome. It's a good idea to see a vet with your dog.Feeding it all kinds of foods the dog normally doesn't eat, such as candy etc., does not really help the case and in the mentioned amounts could cause an upset stomach, which you do not want because you want to avoid vomiting.Good luck to your child!

I was wondering if it was too late to try sauerkraut since my Pitt bull terrier has not acted well since swallowing a tooth pick and throwing up food.Help!

He threw up the food but no toothpick he has not been acting great since this happened.Don't take any chances with your dog.In these cases, time is of the essence. My thoughts are with you and your furry friend.

I saw my dog chewing on a toothpick and pulled it out of his mouth.I tried to find more of it in his mouth, but I think the rest was swallowed. What I got out of him was softened by his chewing.I was thinking of rushing him to the vet but he has tons of safe chew toys and I need to get out of his mouth from outside.Good to know that vomiting is not advised, and that some vets laugh.I want to pray and try to get him to eat as much food and water as I can. There is never a toothpic around.AGH!Please pray for my little guy.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.Everything goes right, that's sincerely hope.Make sure to see the vet as soon as possible.Time is of the essence in situations like this.

Thank you for that.I have allowed my dog to do her steps because of coyotes.I didn't realize she had eaten a toothpick until she vomited an hour later. If the vet does an x-ray, I can't imagine her going under anesthesia to remove it.Just praying.

Oh my goodness! My thoughts are with you.I hope it is a bigger dog. There is a chance that the half toothpick will wander through the body without damaging anything.Good luck to the two of you!
