Why does Marty Stuart always wear scarves?

You wouldn't think there would be much more important business to attend to in the lives of country music fans than to worry about what clothing accessories Marty Stuart chooses to adorn his wardrobe with, but you'd be wrong.

I did not discuss the matter with Marty.Even if the opportunity presented itself, I wouldn't bring up the subject matter with him. Why?The answer to Marty Stuart's scarf fetish should be obvious to all students of traditional country music, even if they have questions about his adornments.

That hasn't stopped the questions, the concerns, and sometimes even the accusations concerning Marty's scarves and what they might be hiding.Did he hurt his neck?Is he hiding a scar? One of the most ridiculous accusations I have seen is that he tried to hang himself. He married Johnny Cash's daughter once and is currently married to a Country Music Hall of Fame member.

One of the biggest misrepresentations about Marty's neck wear is that his scarves are an essential accessory for him to be able to leave the house, when in reality you can find many recent promotional photos of Marty with a naked neck. There are no grotesque scars, embarrassing birthmarks, or big hairy moles. Some have said Marty Stuart wears scarves to hide a neckline that has aged faster than the rest of him, but this certainly doesn't appear to be the case in his scarf-free pictures. Why doesn't Marty dye his hair?

Before the sands of age started carving their cruel lines into his collar, Marty wore shirts that hid his neckline many times. It seems to be his thing.

Now that we know Marty has nothing to hide, what is he saying with his scarves? There is a need for a simple country music history lesson.

From the very beginning of country music, flashy fashion has been at the center of the presentation. In the late 30's, The Most Colorful Hillbilly Band, who were known for their flashy Western costumes, and legendary designers who became icons all their own through their country finery, came to mind.Marty Stuart, who owns a huge collection of country music memorabilia, including Nudie suits and other such costumes from acts like The Maddox Brothers & Rose, Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys, Porter Wagoner, and Johnny Cash, is at the forefront of preserving all of this textile history in country

Marty Stuart was one of the first students to save these vintage styles from dumpsters and thrift shops as country music and Nashville threw them away.

How does the scarf come in?It is simple. The early standard of country and western fashion was the scarf.

Where does this tradition come from?It is simple, the actual cowboys who lived in the West wore scarves and handkerchiefs to protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays, and pulled over their horses on long cattle drives where the cows would stir up incredible dust.Billy the Kid is wearing a scarf.

That is all.Marty Stuart wears scarves because it is a link to country music and America's vibrant Western history that he has worked so hard to preserve. No conspiracy theories, no gruesome scars, nothing to hide or show, just Marty being Marty, finding ways to express his appreciation for the traditions of country music in his own colorful way.

The article never answers the question of why Marty Stuart started wearing scarves.Sometime after the Johnny Cash Memorial Service, he and the Superlatives perform 'Rock Island Line'.The earlier scarves were smaller and the later ones covered the entire neck.It is his choice, only natural that inquiring mimes want to know.

When someone asks me that question online, I always want to say that it's because she likes giving him hickies.I don't care how false it is.

I don't know the exact episode number, but he went back to his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi, on The Marty Stuart Show.He took the viewers on a tour of his childhood home, and had a backyard session with his family. He told a story about an encounter with a gypsies on a train. He explained how trains influenced his life.He said that the gypsies wore scarves and had wild hair just like how Marty wears it now.I thought it was legit at the time.

It's better that he doesn't have to dig a handkerchief out of his pocket if he has to blow his nose.

I agree. He did not wear the scares wide and tall like he does now.Mr. Marty could be getting plastic surgery on his neck in order to save himself pain.He never showed his neck when he wore wide ones as a younger man.His choice, it is so distractive compared to just a few lines. It is contrived looking.

Very interesting lesson.I would have thought it was a reference to Elvis. It goes back a lot farther now.Thank you, Trig!

The show where Presley opened for The Maddox Brothers and saw their colorful stage clothes inspired him to start wearing similar Western garb. They left their coats backstage because it was so hot at the show. When they came off stage, Elvis said, "Someday I'm going to have clothes like this."

My mom was a big fan of Rosev Maddox. We went to see her at a rodeo when I was younger. My mom got an 810 b&w signed by her. That was one of her prized possessions.

We were at the 101 Club in Oceanside California in 1968.When Rose came out of the stall, I told her I was going to tell my friends that I used the same stall. She hugged me and said, "you do that little girl".She sang a song for me.

I don't think it has anything to do with his chin, he's been wearing them as far back as I can remember.

I heard that he went out with a bunch of people and got a huge tattoo on his neck and kept it covered. There is nothing wrong with a tattoo and stage makeup.

You must have watched a lot of PBS.There wasn't anything indiscriminate about it.The flag was black. The worst of what the men did was done by the entire Union Army as a matter of policy.

I haven't had broadcast TV for several years, and when I did, I only watched some kids' shows with my daughter and a show called "Old Time Country Music" which was produced locally for Iowa Public Television.I am aware of Ken Burns but not his work.I would like to see his documentary on baseball, but I think the Civil War piece would be too biased for my taste.

When he found out there was money to be made in capturing escaped slaves and returning them to their owners, he was pro-abolitionist.Anderson was a horse thief who stole mounts from both cavalries before joining the Confederate army for the pay.

Both sides committed atrocities. The Sacking of Osceola does not make the Lawrence massacre any less horrible than it actually was.A person with no dog in the fight would be hard pressed to identify many heroic figures in that war.

He had gang tats on his neck when he was in prison.

I think his clothing is a way of paying homage to the people who created country music.

I believe that Marty feels indebted to the artists who walked before him and that he views the mantle he holds as a fleeting honor.

To accentuate his badness, Marty doesn't need to look like he spends all day in the gym and wear clothes.

Most of the cowboys out here wear scarves just like Marty does everyday in the winter, they are warm and traditional. When the cold north wind picks up, it's really warm because I wear one a lot.

Thanks for the lesson.I like Marty Stuart's style and his band The Fabulous Superlatives. The Big Interview with Dan Rather is on AXS TV.He talks to Marty. The interview was done in Los Angeles.Dan Rather is a huge fan of country music and asked good questions.

I don't know. There is no way to see the right side of his neck in that photo. It seemed to be shadowed.I think there is more to it.I think he stabbed him on the train.

Marty doesn't just wear a scarfe, he makes sure his entire neck is covered. The picture you showed does not show the right side of his neck, it is dark on that side so who knows.

No one else has worn a scarf like Marty's.Donnie Jones.

I asked the question because it occurred to me while watching the show. There are scarves. If his biographer doesn't want to explain it, so be it.I won't lose sleep over it.It is wrong to suggest that the question is inappropriate or that it is meant to insult the person asking it.I know who Marty Stewart is and I appreciate his talent, but I am not a fan of anyone else.He should fire the frog who responded to my question.

You can't post this, but marty Stuart needs to read it.I found an article about the tattoo. If you were a true county fan and grew up on a farm pig, you are not that bad.If you are a true county fan, you don't need a tattoo, but if you wear a scarf, it looks stupid.I grew up listening to my grandfather's music on the farm. The scarf makes the pig look like he doesn't have a neck.Marty Stuart is real.

He is wearing a rag around his neck that is pulled up to his chin and he is hiding something.

Gentlemen from the 1800's wore scarves and not neckties in the antebellum period. It is part of his act, so what if it serves to cover his neck?I like to focus on the music and history of it.Loving the Ken Burns documentary that Marty contributed to.It helps me not to despair over how programmed contemporary country has become if IPreserving the roots is his goal.

I will love Marty Stuart for the rest of my life. They are a pure country.Nobody will take their place. He is following in the footsteps of the Man in Black.

I wear wild rags that are made out of silk in the summer to keep the sun off your neck in winter, but it is not a scarf.

I have developed a cough in March and October.I was told by my doctor to wear a scarf and digest local honey.I wonder if it helps regulate Stuarts' throat temperature so he doesn't develop a cough when he's touring through different climates.

I am a Teddyboy, I wear all sorts of string ties, bandanas, tattoes, and am fond of western fashion.

The scarf is not on.One thinks there is something wrong with him.He wears turtlenecks as well.He looks like Bon Jovi.Just saying. The look should be changed.

I read that he wears the scarfs because he was attacked by some guys and they put a tattoo on his neck, but that is not true.
