Demand and supply. As far as I know, UofT charges the same tuition for almost all programs in their faculty of arts and science, from economics to english literature to biology to, yes, physics.UofT is the highest ranked Canadian school in not just physics, but also most fields so international students and more importantly, their families who fund their tuition, are willing to pay a premium.

UofT is also one of only 2 Canadian universities and 65 universities total in the American Association of Universities (AAU), a group of research universities that includes HPYS, the remaining Ivy Leagues, CMU, UCB, UW, Caltech, and others. For many students and their families, if you are willing to pay 40k for a year of school you don’t mind paying 57k either.Keep in mind that studying at UofT as an international student is much cheaper than studying at a lot of if not most similarly prestigious American universities as an out of state student.

Not to mention that UofT has the biggest endowment per capita of any Canadian university and as a result can offer generous scholarships to overachieving students.Additionally, Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in the world so depending on one’s lifestyle, they might not spend much more overall studying and living at Uoft and Toronto respectively. At the end of the day, most if not all top 100 schools teach the same material and use the same textbooks regardless of which school is more prestigious and if the money is an issue for you, then I suggest going to UBC.

Every province and university have different fee structures. Most in Ontario, Alberta are among high fee institutions.
