You didn't know that some brands were owned by the same company as Doritos.

Frito-Lay is an American brand of tortilla chips produced since 1964.The original ones were not made with flavors.The first Toasted Corn flavor was released in 1966.Specialty flavors began to appear in the late 1980s.There is a restaurant at Disneyland.

Many ads aired during the Super Bowl have gained notability for the brand.

Dorito is a contraction of Spanish doradito, a small fried and golden thing.

The original product was made at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in the early 1960s.Using surplus tortillas and taking the original idea from the traditional Mexican snack known as totopo, the company-owned restaurant cut them up, fried them, and added basic seasoning, resembling the Mexican chilaquiles, but in this case being dry.At the time, Arch West was the vice president of marketing for Frito-Lay.He made a deal in 1964 with Alex Foods, the provider of many items for Casa de Fritos at Disneyland, and produced the chips for a short time, before it was overwhelmed by the volume.[6]

The first tortilla chip to be launched nationally in the United States was released in 1966.[7]

One-third of the total Frito-Lay sales in 1993 were for Doritos.In 1994 Frito-Lay spent $50 million to redesign the chips to make them 20% larger, 15% thinner, and rounded the edges.The vice president of tortilla chip marketing said that the change was due to greater competition from restaurant-style tortilla chips that are larger and more strongly seasoned.The design change was the result of a two-year market research study.The new design made it easier to eat and reduce the amount of scrap that comes from broken corners.The seasoning gave each chip a stronger flavor.The four flavors of the chips were released in January 1995.[8]

In the United States, Frito-Lay eliminated trans fat from their products.Four years before the regulations became mandatory, the Doritos brand began complying with U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeling regulations.[9]

The company was sued in 1993 by a man who claimed his throat was damaged while eating a snack.The shape and rigidity of the chips made them inherently dangerous according to his lawsuit.The study by the former chemistry professor calculated how best to safely swallow the chips.The study could not be presented as evidence because it did not meet scientific standards.[9]

Sales of the snack fell in the United States in 2005.In order to increase sales, the company launched several new flavors, a new label, and more bilingual advertising.Joe Ennen, vice president of Frito-Lay, described this as the most significant rebrand in the history of the brand.[11]

The advertising slogan "for the bold" was adopted by the company after the logo was changed again.It was [13].

The It Gets Better Project, a non-profit organization that supports LGBT youth, was the beneficiary of the limited edition Rainbow Doritos product.Despite some controversy, the promotion raised $100,000 for the organization.[15]

The chips are made from ground corn, vegetable oil, and salt and are available in the UK as 'Lightly Salted'.The flavors of the chip vary with other ingredients.Pork-derived animal rennet is not used in the making of the cheese flavors used on the chip.[16]

In 1996, The Onion featured an article with the headline "Doritos celebrates one millionth ingredient", poking fun at Frito-Lay.[18]

Concerns have been raised that some of the ingredients used in Frito-Lay products may be harmful.[19]

In many countries, Doritos are sold in a variety of flavors.In 1966 they launched nationally in the United States with one flavor: toasted corn.Many consumers outside of the Southwest and West thought the chip was too bland and not spicy for a Mexican snack.After they were introduced nationally in 1967, Frito-Lay developed taco-flavored Doritos.The national distribution of Doritos began in 1972 and was a hit.In the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was a time when Sour Cream and Onion flavors of Doritos were available.There was a sesame seed chip in the late 1970s.Cool Ranch Doritos became popular in 1986.Cool Ranch Doritos are sold under the name " Cool Original" in the UK and are called "Cool American" elsewhere in Europe, as ranch dressing is less common in those places.[21]

In the 1990s, in partnership with parent company PepsiCo's fast food brands, two new flavors of Doritos were introduced.The taco and pizza flavors were simply renamed after the restaurant division was spun off.The Toasted Corn was briefly discontinued due to the popularity of Frito-Lay's Tostitos brand.The taco bell flavor was temporarily re-released under the "back by popular demand" label.

Jumpin' Jack Monterey Cheese was introduced in 1990.This flavor was discontinued.Chester's Cheese Doritos were available for a short time in 1995.Cheetos cheese can be found on the typical Doritos tortilla chip.In 1997 Spicy Nacho was introduced.

For a short time in 2004, Doritos introduced a new shape and form called "Rollitos", which were corn chips shaped into small tubes, like a regular triangular Dorito.The flavors of Rollitos were Nacho Cheesier, Zesty, Cooler Ranch, and Queso Picante."Dinamitas", or little sticks of dynamite, was the new name for this idea.The chili lime combo is one of the two varieties.Rollitos has a slightly different style than Dinamitas.The chips were baked and formed a tube with an oil-submersible box press to fry.It is rolled into a tube before baking and frying.[23]

There are six different versions of "Doritos Collisions".Hot Wings/Blue Cheese is one of the varieties of Collisions.[ 24]

In 2007, Doritos ran a campaign called "Doritos X-13D Flavor Experiment" where black, unidentified bags of Doritos were on the market for consumers to identify and name the flavor."All American Classic" was the only flavor identification on these chips.There is a citation needed.

A sour cream flavor had been added to the recipe around 1985 and was different from the original taco flavor.The taco chips included in the "Collisions" bags were discontinued in most of the United States because customers thought they were closer to the original.In late 2010, the taco flavor recipe that was used in the 1980s returned in a limited edition "retro" styled bag incorporating the original Doritos logo, and in early 2011 the company announced that this incarnation would remain in its permanent product line-up.[26]

Prizes were given as puzzles were solved in the "mystery flavor" quest.Mountain Dew was the mystery flavor.In 2009, there were two new flavors under the banner "Doritos Late Night".All Nighter Cheeseburger was modified as the X-13D Flavor.

The "Degree Burn" flavors were promoted to "cool down" with the release of the "Cease Fire/Max Citrus Freeze".The introduction of Doritos to New Zealand in 2010 included flavors such as Nacho Cheese, Cheese Supreme, Salted, and Salsa.The original packaging design of Doritos was revived this year.

A hot sauce flavor called Tapatio was released in 2011.There was a contest to write the end of a commercial for two new flavors, "Onion Rings n' Ketchup" and "Blazin' Buffalo and Ranch", and to vote for which of the two flavors would be taken off the shelves.The Onion Rings n' Ketchup received the most votes and remained on sale.[28]

In the spring of 2015, there was a limited release of Doritos Roulette in the US.Out of every six chips, one would be extra spicy.In July of 2015, George Pindar School reported an incident where an asthmatic student had trouble breathing after eating one of the spicy varieties contained in the pack.30

Product placement in movies, such as Wayne's World, as well as television commercials featuring the brand, have been included in the marketing campaigns.[33]

For a long time, Doritos advertised during the Super Bowl.According to Thomas L. Harris's Value-Added Public Relations, the most-used single video news release of 1995 was a Doritos Super Bowl Commercial featuring recently defeated US state governors Mario Cuomo and Ann Richards.The ad ended with viewers aware that the change they referred to was not political, but a new packaging for Doritos.The ad generated a lot of attention before it ran.When they were interviewed on 60 Minutes, the two governors were often seen eating chips.[34]

In 1998, the former Miss USA was cast in a Super Bowl commercial.In the ad, filmed in a Laundromat, she plays a sexy customer who catches chips in her mouth as they come flying.Frito-Lay signed "The Doritos Girl" to a three-year contract after the ad's success.[35]

The Crash the Super Bowl contest allowed consumers to create their own Doritos commercials.The public was able to vote for their favorite.The company decided to run two ads instead of one because the vote was so close.The ratings of commercials during the Super Bowl were very high.The following year, Doritos sponsored a contest to find a musician to feature in a Super Bowl ad.Kina Grannis' ad generated a lot of publicity, but it was last in popularity among the program's ads.[37]

The "Free Doritos" ad, which featured an office worker with a snow globe, was the winner of the fan-created commercials.The creators of the ad, Joe and Dave Herbert, were given a $1 million prize for their work.The second place ad placed in the top five according to USA Today.The ad featured a man who discovered that every crunch from his bag of chips causes him to change his mind until he runs out.Another popular commercial from the group of finalist included an executive making a presentation to other executives on a new (fictional) Doritos flavor called "Doritos Beer", which, as the name implies, is beer-flavored Doritos, with each chip containing as much alcohol as an equivalent ofThere is a can of beer.The executive making the presentation is drunk on the chips and down to his underwear and tie by the end of the commercial.If three of the commercials sweep the top three positions in the Ad Meter contest, all the creators would be awarded a total of $5 million, broken down as $1 million for first place, $600,000 for second.[41]

The "Chip Hat" commercial was aired during the Super Bowl in Canada and advertised a prize of $25,000 and 1% of all associated sales to someone that can both name and create an ad for the new chip flavor.Ryan Coopersmith of Montreal submitted the winning name, Scream Cheese.

The "House Rules" commercial was a "Crash the Super Bowl" finalist.ADBOWL ranked it as the second best ad of the year.

An ad for the Super Bowl featured a grandma and baby in a wheelchair trying to get a bag of chips by using a slingshot.A child stole the bag and constantly teased them.The baby grabbed the bag with enough force to get it back.The child, grandma and baby are eating a snack.

The father in the ad offered his son a bag of chips if he made pigs fly.The father gave the bag of chips to his son after he attached rockets to a pig.

In 2008, a 30-second advertisement for the brand of tortilla chips was beamed into a planetary system 42 light years away.The project was done in collaboration with a space center.The winning advertisement was transmitted on June 12, 2008.The ad was beamed towards a distant star in the constellation that may harbor life.[42]

Doritos was the main sponsor of Wolves for the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons, the latter of which was spent in the premier league.Stephen Colbert's "Hail to the Cheese" was sponsored by Doritos.The money given to Colbert could not be used to directly fund his campaign, so he used it to fund The Colbert Report.He said he wouldn't use his show to plug the chips, but he did.Colbert said his body would stop producing bright orange waste after the campaign flopped.In March 2008, Colbert and Doritos collaborated to promote Colbert's coverage of the Pennsylvania primaries.[47]

The public was asked to name a new flavor and to create an online video to promote it.Natalie received the most points based on a number of factors, including most widely viewed, winning a cash prize after she submitted her video.48

The first Doritos flavors in New Zealand were Nacho Cheese, Cheese Supreme, Salsa, and Salted.It was the new brand of CC's.

Arch West, a Frito-Lay marketing executive who created the first national tortilla chip brand, died in Dallas at the age of 97.It is said that the corporate response to the tortilla chip idea waslukewarm.

The partnership between Doritos and Taco Bell resulted in the creation of the Doritos Locos Tacos, which was introduced on March 8, 2012.There is a standard taco.The taco comes either as a regular taco or a taco supreme, with either ground beef, lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, and sour cream, or both.When the restaurant business was spun off from the corporate umbrella in 1997, it became what is now Yum!There are brands.

In March of 2012 a new line of chips were introduced.The chips are bigger than the standard ones.[51]
