How To Adjust an Oven Pilot Light

Call the appliance repair specialist if your gas oven isn't heating. If the pilot light keeps going out, the flame might be too low, but if it's too high, you'll waste gas.The gas flow can be adjusted by turning the shutter screw.Relight the pilot light if it has gone out.

Step 1: To get to the thermostat control, remove the control panel and turn off the oven.

If the thermostat control is behind the control panel or at the bottom of the oven, you need to read your owner's manual. If you want to remove the control panel from the oven, use a screwdriver or pull off the knob. When it's time to put it back in place, put the knob or screw in a safe place.

Step 2: If the flame is yellow, turn the shutter screw clockwise.

It's not getting enough gas if your pilot light goes out frequently. You just need to open the shutter to get more gas. When you see the flame get larger, turn the screw counterclockwise.Keep the screw loosened until the flame is blue and between 2.5 to 3.8 cm high.If the flame is blue with yellow tips, you need to adjust the screw. The flame is about 2.5 cm high and should be loosened until it is completely blue.

Step 3: If the blue flame is too high, turn the shutter screw clockwise.

If the flame looks higher than 1 2 inches ( 3.8 cm), it's getting too much gas.Use a flathead screwdriver and tighten the screw clockwise until the flame is between 2.5 to 3.8 cm high.

Step 4: Put the control panel back in place.

Place the control panel back or put the access screen over the shutter screw once you've adjusted the pilot light.Make sure the screen doesn't fall off.

Step 5: Open a window and turn off the oven.

If you've tried several times to turn on the oven, it might be releasing gas.The oven and stovetop burners should be turned off.Get some fresh air in the room by opening a window. If you want more air in the kitchen, turn on a ceiling fan.

Step 6: The pilot light hole can be found in the front or back of the oven.

There is a small hole in the oven floor that is connected to the gas pipes. The hole should say "pilot light."The back left corner of the oven is where the hole is located.

Step 7: If the oven door is removed it will be easier to access the pilot light.

If you need to take the oven door off, you have to find the pilot light. It will be easier to reach the pilot light if it is in the back corner. If your pilot light is at the front of the oven, you can adjust it without taking the door off.

Step 8: The control panel can be accessed from the bottom of the oven.

If you lift the baseplate from the bottom of the oven, you can see the pilot light. To remove the baseplate from the oven, use a flathead screwdriver. If your oven has a drawer at the bottom, you may have to remove it to access the control panel.

Step 9: To ignite the oven control knob, hold a flame to the hole of the pilot light.

Look at the knob that turns your oven on.Clicking will let you know that gas is flowing through the line. While the knob is set to "ignite" take a long lighter and hold it near the pilot light that you found earlier. The word "ignite" might be replaced by a picture of a flame.

Step 10: Push the thermostat knob for up to a minute.

After you've lit the pilot light, your owner's manual could tell you to keep pushing the thermostat knob.Hold the knob for about a minute so the pilot light stays on.Most ovens that were made after 2004 have this.

Step 11: If the pilot light is still on, turn off the oven.

The oven control knob needs to be turned off. After your pilot is lit, you should be able to turn the oven on and off. Before you put the baseplate and door back, check it a few times.Once you're done, turn off the oven.If the pilot light goes out, you may need to make a bigger flame or replace the thermocouple.
