How To Defrag (Disk Defragment) a Hard Drive on Windows 8.1 Pro

Follow the following steps to learn how to fragment a hard drive on a Windows 8.1 Pro operating system.A handy guide on how to add the following icons to the desktop will be included in this guide.

Step 1: Click on the drop down menu and select "Personalise" to navigate to your "Desktop".

Step 2: There is a box called "Personalisation".

The title "Change Desktop Icons" can be found on the left side of the box.You can click on it.

Step 3: Click on it.

There is a box called "Desktop Icon Settings".There are five check boxes at the top of the box.To apply, click at the bottom of the box and make sure all of them are checked.The Personalisation box can now be closed as well.

Step 4: You can see the icons on your desktop.

These are useful additions to the navigation of Windows 8, which are hard to do.

Step 5: The "Computer / My Computer / This PC" is an icon.

Click on it to open it.You have to use the Windows 8 file explorer on your desktop.The (C:) Drive is the primary hard drive that the operating system is running off of.Click on the "Properties" option at the bottom of the drop down menu if you need to.

Step 6: The box to open is called Windows 8.1 Pro.

Whatever you call that drive, it's properties.There is an option to the bottom right of the pie chat as well as six tabs across the screen.

Step 7: The Disk Clean up button can be found at the bottom of the pie chart.

It will start calculating what can be deleted once this is done.The option to clean up files that are not necessary on the Hard Drive is not the de-frag.When calculating a box, make sure all of the check boxes are checked and then click "OK".

Step 8: There is a "Tools" tab at the top of the box.

You can see theOptimise and Defragment Drive option once this has been done.

Step 9: There is a box called "Optimise Drives".

In this window, you will see a list of all the drives connected to the computer and its status on the far right alongside its media type and last run.

Step 10: Select the Hard Drive you want to de-frag by clicking on it and highlighting it so that it has a blue highlight next to the Analyse button.

There is a blue and yellow shield next to it that will prompt you to continue the operation.
