How To Hide Pipes in the Kitchen

There are a few ways to hide exposed kitchen pipes and improve the overall look of your kitchen. If you want a more thorough option, you can construct a plywood box around your kitchen pipes to completely block them from view.

Step 1: Pick a color scheme.

If you want to hide your pipes, the best option is to use a paint color that matches your kitchen walls or ceiling. You will be hiding the pipes in plain sight.Even though the pipes are out in the open, they will fade into the background and become less noticeable. If you want to make your pipes look like part of the décor, you can paint them in a fresh color. You could paint the pipes bright colors that match the rest of your kitchen décor and turn them into statement pieces.

Step 2: Clean the pipe.

To remove dirt, rust, and old paint, use a steel wool brush. If you want to follow up, you can use a wet rag.Use warm water and a mild detergent. After wiping the pipe with a soapy rag, you can rinse it off with clean water. To dry the pipe, use a dry rag.The paint may not adhere to the surface if the pipe is left moist.

Step 3: Protect the area.

The area of furniture needs to be clear. All fixed appliances should be covered with plastic sheets to protect them from stray paint. All furniture should be as far away as possible to protect it.You might have to move it to another room while you work on your pipes. It is also a good idea to protect yourself. You should wear clothes that you don't mind getting paint on.If you have to paint a pipe on the ceiling, you might want to wear goggles to protect your eyes.

Step 4: The primer should be applied to metal.

Pick a primer that is rust-proof.Use a standard paintbrush to paint a smooth layer of primer over the pipe.Make sure you pick the right primer. Before you buy the right primer, you need to know what your pipes are made from.Wait for the primer to dry before moving on.Determine how long you will need to wait by reading the primer label.

Step 5: It's a good idea to paint a first coat.

Using a clean paintbrush, apply an even, smooth layer of your chosen paint over the dry primer.Make sure the paint is formulated for the type of metal you're applying it to.Since the primer and paint will be compatible with one another, it's a good idea to use paint from the same manufacturer.Determine how much time needs to pass between coats by reading the paint label.

Step 6: Apply more coats if necessary.

Paint over the first coat when the pipe is ready for another coat.Allow it to dry.You don't need to apply more than two coats. If you decide to apply more, make sure that you have enough time to finish each coat.If you want to move furniture back into the kitchen, you need to let the paint dry for a longer period of time. You should check the manufacturer's label for an exact measurement of the time it will take for the paint to dry.The project is done after the final coat of paint dries.

Step 7: Determine the area.

It works best for pipes lying in a corner. For pipes running along one wall seam, it works well. There needs to be two walls next to the pipe, so you need to box in it from two sides. The pipe should be relatively close even if it isn't in a corner or along a wall seam.

Step 8: Measure the area.

To find the depth, width, and length of the pipe space, use a combination square.Place the measuring tool against one of the walls.Measure from the wall to the pipe's exterior side.Measure from the outside of the pipe to the other wall. The necessary width should be given by this. The widest point of the pipe is where you should be measuring.Measure the length of the pipe to know how long your boxing will take.

Step 9: Measure and cut.

Cut three battens to match the length of the pipe from wall to wall.If one or two of the battens are placed over a wall with skirting on either end, you will need to shorten them a little. To find the altered length, Measure the wall length again, this time from skirt to skirt. The box sides will be supported by these battens.Use 2 inches (5 cm) wide plywood to create each one.

Step 10: Attach the first two battens to the wall.

Attach the battens to the wall on either side of the pipe.Place the battens in the corner seam of the wall. The placement of one should match the depth of the pipe and the other should be in line with the width. The screws and wall plugs you use will work on the wall or ceiling you're dealing with.If you want to fix the battens onto masonry, you'll need to use drill bits, 2 inch (5 cm) number 8 screws, and red wall plugs. The screws need to be separated by approximately 40 cm.If you want to twist the screw in the wall plug, you have to drill a pilot hole into it.

Step 11: Cut the plywood.

Measure and cut.The sides of your pipe boxing will be these. The length of each board needs to match that of the pipe space. The width of the board must match the distance between the wall and the outside edge. The width of the other board must match the distance between the two walls. It's a good idea to measure the space again before cutting the plywood boards to size to make sure they match the width and depth of your pipe.

Step 12: Attach one box side to the other.

Attach the edge of one box side to the wall using wood glue. The width side of the board should stay out from the wall and the plywood side should rest on the outside.Make sure that the length of the board is covered.Attach the plywood side to the board with heavy-duty construction staplers or nails. The staplers are 5 to 10 cm apart.

Step 13: Place the second batten.

Attach the third batten to the side of the box with wood glue. The third batten should be positioned so that it runs parallel to the first. It should be on the opposite side of the wall.Attach the bond with wood staplers or nails that are 5 to 10 cm apart.

Step 14: The second box side should be added.

Place the second measured and cut side on the exposed side of the pipe. There is a piece of plywood lying on the outside of the open batten. The corner with the opposite piece of plywood should be on the other side of the piece.Attach the plywood to the connecting battens with wood glue and nails.

Step 15: It's up to you to paint as you please.

The boxing can be painted or stained to match the wall color. Before painting, remove furniture from the room and cover the floor with plastic sheets. It's important to prevent paint from splattering onto other surfaces.

Step 16: The seams should be sealed.

Silicone or caulk can be used to seal the seams after the paint has dried.Let the caulk dry by squeezing a bead across the seam. The pipe boxing will not be wet if the seams are sealed. It could cause the wood to rot if it gets into the boxing. The project is done when you seal the seams.
