If you want to add a dimmer switch to your lamp, you need to separate the two wires of the lamp's cord.The neutral and hot strands of the cord have the same insulation.To install your dimmer, slice through the hot wire at the center of the juncture.Use the wire strippers to remove insulation from both ends of the hot wire.

Remove the cover of the dimmer switch.The manufacturer's instructions say to place the neutral wire along the inside of the switch box.Place the cut ends of the hot wire under the two terminal clamps with the help of long-nose pliers and turn the screws with a screwdriver.Attach the dimmer switch cover to the switch.

The dimmer switch needs to be plugged in and turned on to make sure it works.The dimmer should be adjusted as desired.
