How To Make a Clew Knot

A clew knot is used for hammock making. It is easy to do but can get a bit tricky if you are handling a lot of lengths at the same time. You will need to adjust the measurements according to the number of cords your project requires you to work with.

Step 1: In half, fold six lengths of cord.

Attach a ring, rod, or other form of holder to keep it in place. With a larks head knot, secure.

Step 2: The cords are in your head.

As you work with the cords, keep the numbering system steady by using numbers 1 to 12.If you can't remember the cord numbers, use small plastic bread tabs with the numbers written on them, then shift and remove these as needed.

Step 3: The cords should be pulled apart evenly.

Pull them taut. When cords are done, you'll take them off to the side.

Step 4: Get ready to weave.

Each set of left to right and right to left must alternate between under and over. The instructions will make it clear.

Step 5: Left to right, weave cord #1.

Under cord #2, then over cord #3, etc.Continue weaving towards the other side.

Step 6: The first cord on the right this time is cord #12.

It should be passed under cord 11 and over cord 10.To meet back with cord #2, follow this weaving motion back to the left side.

Step 7: Pick up cord #2 and give it to cord #3.

Going under the cord this time, Weave to the right. The opposite of the first and second weave rows is the over-under sequence.

Step 8: Return the weaving to the right.

Continue until you get to cord #3.

Step 9: The weave cord is under cord four and over cord five.

Use this sequence to weave back to the right.

Step 10: There are two weave cords under cord #9 and over cord #8.

Use this sequence to weave back to the left.

Step 11: Under cord #6 is the weave cord.

Use this sequence to keep weaving back to the right.

Step 12: Over cord #8 and under cord 7.

Use this sequence to keep weaving back to the left.

Step 13: Under cord #6 and under cord 7 are the places to weave the cord.

Step 14: Under cord 7 and over cord 6 are the weave cords.

Step 15: Don't weave cords number 6 and number 7.

The ends of the cords should be pulled to tighten the knot.

Step 16: When attaching this knot to a hammock, the loose ends of the cords are attached in a different order than when they were woven.

The cords will be attached at the center of the hammock rod or ring.Attach cords 8 and 5, then cords 9 and 4.Attach cords 11 and 2.The last cords to be attached are #12 and #1.
